Today was really a memorable one. Jackie, Steven, the children and I left about 1:30 p.m. for Cache Valley where they were holding the family reunion at the park. We were the first ones there besides Lloyd, Rosemary and Phillip. Then the others started to arrive and we got to greet a lot of them personally before they all got there which gave Steve and Jackie a chance to meet them individually because they had not met some of them before. By the time most of them had arrived, it was about 4:30 and everyone was eating and enjoying the delicious food. At the same time enjoying each other’s company because we put all together and had a buffet style meal. That way everyone could eat a little of everyone else’s food and caused everyone to mix together all the more. Steve and Jackie, of course, were a little hesitant because they didn’t know anyone too well but before the afternoon was over, I think they felt pretty much at home. We left about 6 o’clock to come home and it was very pleasant as it was cloudy and that made it very cool. During the business meeting they had arts and crafts for the children and they had games and activities fore everyone throughout the afternoon. Steve and Jackie both said they enjoyed themselves and the girls were delighted. They are really looking forward to the next time. Mary Jean and Kathie were reminiscing of how they came and lived with us when they were doing their practice teaching. They both said they really didn’t appreciate like they should have done.

Sunday July 12
I studied for my Sunday School and Relief Society lessons and walked over to the church and back. I really felt good. I spent the afternoon writing in my journal, writing some letters and cards and making some telephone calls.
Monday July 13
I’m going to write here about the new construction being added to our church house. (left blank…I guess she forgot!)
Friday July 17
It was just about one year ago today when we boarded the plane to go back on the American Heritage tour – Betty Mecham, Betty & Wally Green and myself. I used money that I should have used to complete projects around the house. I have several half-finished ones. But I wouldn’t have missed that trip for anything – we have had as much enjoyment out of watching the pictures and remembering the different places and things we did as when we actually did them. There were many spiritual experiences that were really testimony builders.

July 9
I’m taking Thursday and Friday off for vacation days. My aim is to spend them working in my yard. Next week Steve Carrigan is coming to paint the outside of the house. I’m really excited about it. It will be yellow and brown to match the brick. Well, I got a lot done outside on Thursday and Friday. My yard really looks beautiful – the lawn is so green and the flowers are getting pretty. Lisa, Amy and Katie stayed over on Friday night and Saturday; they helped me mow my lawn. I got my trees and strawberries watered and also the pine tree on the cemetery.
Saturday July 11
Today was Maudie Rhodes funeral. It was very beautiful and so was she. There wasn’t hardly anyone attended except a few neighbors and friends. I felt bad over this because the funeral really made an impression on me.

July 6
We had an extra crowded day die to an overscheduled agenda but we got through it eventually. The auditors came up to make their report and it turned out to be better than I expected. It was not in compliance in every respect but it made the grade than goodness. I’m really grateful for this.
July 7
Routine day – Maudie Rhodes died this morning.
July 8
Routine day.

July 3
Was a legal holiday because the 4th fell on a Saturday. I went over and finished my four-generation sheet and sent it off in the mail. The rest of the day I was mowing and watering my lawn.
July 4
I always get a real patriotic feeling around the fourth. I want to wear my flag pin that I bought from Daisy Crouch years ago. I also like to dress in something red, white and blue. Today I worked around the yard and also worked at keeping my granddaughters busy. Lisa, Amy and Katie were here almost all day! We were busy making rolls, salads, cooking meat etc. We had a barbecue about 6 o’clock: chicken, ham, etc. It was all very delicious then we went over to the park for the program and fireworks, which were very good.

June 29
Routine day at work. In the evening Sharon Craig and I went Relief Society visiting teaching. The only one we found home was Jean Wixom. Tuesday evening I went to Deanna Jensen’s and chatted for a moment on my way to the public hearing on the Cottonwood Road. There was around 30 people present. Comm Bohman met to take charge. He stated the reason for the hearing and then invited comments from the audience. There was a variety of answers but it didn’t change the comm’s decision to abandon the road. I imagine it will end in another court case.
July 1 (Wednesday)
Oh blessed day – payday- now I can pay my bills. My bills always seem to exceed my earnings, but when I think of all my blessings I am very grateful.
July 2 (Thursday)
Routine day.
June 20, 1981
Today was a special day – a very special day. I performed my first and only wedding ceremony – Ken and Jeanie’s. They came down at noon and we went through the marriage ceremony. Ken looked so grubby, I thought, “Oh Ken!” They got some snowballs and roses. At 4:20 I went up to Blakley’s to get the license filled out and to get oriented. They had the outside decorated so nice and when Ken came out of the house he looked so nice. He’d gotten his hair cut and he had on a neat pair of black slacks and shoes and a yellow shirt. The ceremony wet very well, but just as they said “I do” Devon Mecham came roaring up the lane with his tractor. It was really a disruption, but it was humorous. Steve, Jackie and the girls were there and then Lynn and Deloy came also. There was a large crowd of Jeanie’s folks and they seemed nice. After the ceremony they had a lovely lunch fixed. Taking everything into consideration, I think it was pretty nice. On Sunday we went to church. I helped give the Relief Society lesson and Joan Conrad was the teacher. Ken Nelson and his family gave the program for sacrament meeting and it was well done. Ken is a very devoted father and husband. Instead of the Sunday School lesson, they had the Junior Sunday School for Father’s Day. So sweet. Monday and Tuesday I spent getting ready to go to Utah County Convention up at Park City. We left Wednesday morning at 8:00 a.m. Betty Mecham went with me and I was delighted to have her. We got there, got our hotel reservations and out registration and went to the general session. After lunch, Betty went sight seeing with Wally Green and Vaughn Larson while the rest of us went to our departmental sessions. They had the banquet in the evening, which was very delicious, and we were entertained b y the Beehive State Chorus (men). That was really an outstanding singing group. They steak was rare, without being bloody – probably marinated. Best I have eat! Thursday, departmental sessions then the ladies luncheon. Another success in food. Thursday afternoon we went up on the ski lift and came down the Alpine Slide, which is like a cement irrigation ditch and we used little toboggan-like sleds that we could control by braking. Fun! The luau was fantastic. The only Hawaiian dish we didn’t have was poi. Roast pork, and marinated chicken and all the exotic fruits of the islands. It really reminded me of our trip to Hawaii several years ago. We came home on Friday. ON Saturday I was bringing my lawn up on the porch (does she mean lawnmower?) after I got through mowing the lawn and I slipped and fell through the glass storm door. I cut my back and my left arm pretty badly but nothing really serious. I mean no stitches. Sunday Marlene gave the Cultural Refinement lesson in Relief Society. It was on Medieval Europe. I really enjoyed the art, literature and the music. I’ve always loved to read historical novels of that period. The music is really fascinating. Lurinda Peterson has really taught me how to appreciate and enjoy music, which I used to dislike intensely.
June 15-19, 1981
This week was a hassle from beginning to end. Monday was blue, Tuesday was too. Plus it was equalization day – the last day. The place was swarming with people who were inquiring regarding their taxes and the new evaluations. We are practically through the audit thank goodness. It is so much more detailed and precise – I can’t believe it. Everything has to have a written confirmation. We went clear back into 1973 to get some figures straightened out. The comm’s meeting was through by 10:30 pm. That’s really early for them. Right now we have so many controversial issues at stake. Cottonwood Road is one of them. I think that issue is going to end up in court again. Me, I have no personal feelings about the matter, but I can see bother sides of the issue for the standpoint of the property owners protecting their property from vandalism and the public who is being kept from enjoying the beauties of nature and the freedom of the out-of-doors.
June 14, 1981
The weather was very cool this morning when we went to church. This evening the girls came over and stayed with me while Steve and Jackie went out to Brigham to the viewing of Ralph Forsgren, an uncle. I told the girls they could write a sentence in my journal – aren’t they sweet. John can’t write yet.
