November 26 – 27, 1981

November 26

Today dawned beautiful and bright.  I made hot rolls (delicious too!), green shrimp salad and a batch of Rice Crispy treats.  Jeannie came down and we went and had dinner with Steve and Jackie and the girls (and John).  It was very delicious and enjoyable.  I really love Jeannie.  She’s so pleasant and even tempered – a real joy to be around.  Steve showed films of when they were growing up. Jeannie really enjoyed them.  The girls came over and stayed tonight.  They had the usual ball playing post office and store.

Also dawned bright and beautiful.  I was really happy because I had planned on going to Cache Valley for Mildred and Vernal’s Golden Wedding anniversary.  I went up and got there about 3 p.m.  I had a chance to have a visit with them and their family before the open house began.  All their children and their spouses were present plus grandchildren and great-grandchildren.   It was an impressive gathering and one to be very proud of.  Ruth Allen Brunker was there.  It seemed good to be with her again.

November 24 Sharon Craig and I went visiting teaching to Connie Wardon’s and Jean Wixom. We enjoyed visiting with them for a few minutes and it had to be a few minutes because I had to be in Peterson to meet with the Stake Presidency. They asked me to be the Stake co-chairman of the single adult transition program. Of course you know, I accepted. It was Pres. Calvin Stephens who interviewed me and there isn’t many people who can meet that look and refuse.

November 25 When I got home I was so tired and cold, I decided to stay home and relax instead of going to my Old Testament class. I felt guilty but I also enjoyed very much getting warmed up and staying in and not going out in the cold again. Ah the blessings of a warm house and bed!

November 16

This morning started the first of a three day murder trial.  Janis W. was going to court but she classed late Sunday evening to say that she was sick, so I had to go to court.  We had called 45 witnesses be cause we anticipated that we would have a hard time choosing a jury on a case like that.  Imagine my surprise when the first seventeen were called.  They chose the jury from among them and the trial was in progress by 10:30.  It had started at 9:00 a.m.  Robert Hastie was the Deputy Sheriff who had handled the case so he was the chief witness for the prosecution and he did an A-1 job as a witness.  I was really proud of him and I believe he was proud of himself.  At any rate, court recessed at 5 p.m. and started again the next morning and went all that day.  It quit soon after 5 but I didn’t go home. I just stayed there for comm’s meeting, which lasted until 9:30.  Very fortunate for me because we had a case scheduled for 8:30 on Wednesday morning.  The murder trial resumed at 9 a.m. By noon the jury went out and everyone expected them to be out for several hours and we were all astounded when they announced 20 minutes later that they had reached a verdict.  They all filed in and the judge handed the verdict to me to read.  It was “not guilty”.  Again, many of the people acted amazed.  It seemed like the jury had their minds made up before they ever left the courtroom because they didn’t have time to study the evidence.  Needless to say, there were several very happy people.  Mrs. Furrh was one and her daughter was another.  I was thankful for a nice, quiet day on Thursday and Friday.

Saturday and Sunday were nice.  On Saturday I worked for a couple of hours over at work and went home expecting to have Macey and Jamie for the evening but at the last minute they decided to take them bowling with them.  This caused me to miss Leann Flitton’s open house and the stake singsong they had over to the high school.  All the children participated and also Deloy from his ward.  They said it was all very good and I was disappointed to miss it.  However, Ken called Sunday morning and said they wanted to come down so I told them to come down around 4 o’clock and I would cook dinner.  I invited Steve, Jackie and the girls down also, so they would have a chance to play together and they had a ball.  In fact, they didn’t want to go home.

October 25 I didn’t get to see Jeane on her birthday so I sent a birthday card and some money to her and she called me to thank me. She really seemed to appreciate it. I surely am growing fond of her. She is pleasant and easy to get along with and she isn’t temperamental. She and ken seem to get along well together. I really hope they can be compatible and can build something worthwhile out of their marriage.

October 28 Tonight I went to the class that Calvin Stephens teaches on the “Old Testament”. It is a truly spiritual experience to listen to his teachings but my what wicked characters there were at that time but not anymore so than what the world is harboring today. Thursday I tried to so some visiting teaching but didn’t make any headway. I went again Friday evening but only caught one at home. I also attended the viewing of Mary Whittier Vincent (Short’s mother). It brought back many memories of our friendship with Short and Barbara. She taught me hot to make lemon pie.

October 23

I took the day off and went d own to the temple and did 3 ordinances.  One thing made it a super experience.  As I was going through the veil on the third session and guess who took me through – my sister Alice.  When she looked at me she was dumb-founded.  It was an extra special experience.  I forgot to mention that the 22nd was Sher’s birthday – 14.  I picked up Lisa, Amy and Katie and we went down and I gave her some money.  She was very thrilled.  She is a very lovely young lady.  She had been down to the temple to do baptisms for the dead.  She did 31.  What a memorable experience to have on your birthday.

 October 24

Today was Jeane’s birthday.  The girls came over and helped me with some of my work – got quite a bit accomplished.  Steve had gone hunting so Jackie, the girls, John and I went over to the drive-in for supper and we all enjoyed it.  Sunday (25th) was the change in time – I had turned my clock back the night before so I got along fine.  It was Woodrow and Twila’s farewell testimonial.  It was very spiritual and uplifting.  They should make very find missionaries.

Also, during this week, I felt quite upset over Ken and his problems with the girls.  The man Val is living with at this time went up to Ken’s the other night and wants to adopt the girls and he isn’t even married to Val yet.  This got Ken all upset and of course, I was upset also.

On Friday evening, Betty, Frankie (Stone) and I went to Coalville to Stan Peterson’s reception.  It was also very lovely.  The second generations of Person girls were there – Lois, Jesse and Elaine.  Saturday I spent the day cleaning, getting ready for when Verla will be here and Sunday I did few odds and ends.  During the week I was really busy at work with the budget.  We don’t have the mill levy back yet and so w4e are sort of on pins and needles.  On Thursday evening we had a water ditch meeting and its kind of a sticky situation where Rell Argyle is concerned.  He’s trying to build a house up Line Creek and there’s a great bother about whether it’s legal or not.

I attended the Old Testament class on Wed. night at 6 o’clock over at the seminary.  I’m really going to enjoy this.

I worked until the time to go and get my hair done and then I picked Jamie and Macy up to come down and play and sleep overnight.  We came down and picked up the lunch and the rest of the kids along with Wanda and Melissa.  We all went over to Riverside Park and had a picnic and the girls had a ball playing.  We came home and the girls got their sleeping bags rolled out on the living room floor.  By that time it was about 9:30 p.m. so I laid down and had a little snooze.  When I woke up around 10:30 they were still up having a late night snack.  Then they settled down and I didn’t hear anymore until the next morning.  I got up and fixed their breakfast.  We all went outside and mowed and watered the lawn.  They had a picnic lunch out under the tree on the lawn.  In the afternoon the five –Lisa, Amy, Katie, Macy and Jamie and Melissa, JoDee and Christine (Randall) and Cheney and Travis Allen were swimming in the irrigation ditch, first on Olga Hannum’s lawn, then on Nell Allen’s.  They played all afternoon riding their bikes, etc. until 5 o’clock and then I had to take Macy and Jamie home.  Macy was really unhappy and I had to do some tall talking to get her to go.  Needless to say, I had a rather strenuous time and was glad to go to bed but in the night I got really sick at my stomach and I went in the bathroom and lost all the corn and apples I had eaten for supper, but I felt better and I was able to get up and go to my meetings today.  I went to Steve and Jackie’s for dinner and later they took me for a ride up around East Canyon Dam then over into Henefer and into Coalville.  I hadn’t been up there for a long time and it was very, very enjoyable.  I spent some time this evening preparing for the Cultural Refinement lesson on Indonesia and Singapore for next week.

August 12

I got invited up to Ken’s and Jeanie’s for supper tonight.  Macy and Jamie were there and we had a delicious supper – corn on the cob, string beans, pork roast, mashed potatoes and gravy.  Jeanie had taken the little girls down and bought them new clothes and they were beautiful.  They seemed to have a good relationship with each other.  I am so thankful and I hope that things will turn out to be good for them.  We must n ever give up hope that they will.  Heaven bless us all.

August 13

I am looking back and trying to remember what I did on Thursday.  I know they girls were here in the evening for a while because I tried to get ready for the weekend – if such a thing is possible.  Also I froze raspberries.

June 20, 1981

Today was a special day – a very special day. I performed my first and only wedding ceremony – Ken and Jeanie’s. They came down at noon and we went through the marriage ceremony. Ken looked so grubby, I thought, “Oh Ken!” They got some snowballs and roses. At 4:20 I went up to Blakley’s to get the license filled out and to get oriented. They had the outside decorated so nice and when Ken came out of the house he looked so nice. He’d gotten his hair cut and he had on a neat pair of black slacks and shoes and a yellow shirt. The ceremony wet very well, but just as they said “I do” Devon Mecham came roaring up the lane with his tractor. It was really a disruption, but it was humorous. Steve, Jackie and the girls were there and then Lynn and Deloy came also. There was a large crowd of Jeanie’s folks and they seemed nice. After the ceremony they had a lovely lunch fixed. Taking everything into consideration, I think it was pretty nice. On Sunday we went to church. I helped give the Relief Society lesson and Joan Conrad was the teacher. Ken Nelson and his family gave the program for sacrament meeting and it was well done. Ken is a very devoted father and husband. Instead of the Sunday School lesson, they had the Junior Sunday School for Father’s Day. So sweet. Monday and Tuesday I spent getting ready to go to Utah County Convention up at Park City. We left Wednesday morning at 8:00 a.m. Betty Mecham went with me and I was delighted to have her. We got there, got our hotel reservations and out registration and went to the general session. After lunch, Betty went sight seeing with Wally Green and Vaughn Larson while the rest of us went to our departmental sessions. They had the banquet in the evening, which was very delicious, and we were entertained b y the Beehive State Chorus (men). That was really an outstanding singing group. They steak was rare, without being bloody – probably marinated. Best I have eat! Thursday, departmental sessions then the ladies luncheon. Another success in food. Thursday afternoon we went up on the ski lift and came down the Alpine Slide, which is like a cement irrigation ditch and we used little toboggan-like sleds that we could control by braking. Fun! The luau was fantastic. The only Hawaiian dish we didn’t have was poi. Roast pork, and marinated chicken and all the exotic fruits of the islands. It really reminded me of our trip to Hawaii several years ago. We came home on Friday. ON Saturday I was bringing my lawn up on the porch (does she mean lawnmower?) after I got through mowing the lawn and I slipped and fell through the glass storm door. I cut my back and my left arm pretty badly but nothing really serious. I mean no stitches. Sunday Marlene gave the Cultural Refinement lesson in Relief Society. It was on Medieval Europe. I really enjoyed the art, literature and the music. I’ve always loved to read historical novels of that period. The music is really fascinating. Lurinda Peterson has really taught me how to appreciate and enjoy music, which I used to dislike intensely.

April 14, 1981

Well, I got the income taxes off in the mail today. I just about worry Janis and Betty to death because I leave it so late, but I know I’ll get them mailed before the deadline. Paula Francis, Gwen’s daughter, died after about 3 years illness. She was only 26 years olds (same age as Rex.) It seems sad that anyone that young has to go before they really have a chance to live, but like everything else there is a purpose. Gwen and George have really taken it in their stride. They are really great people. On Tuesday, 14th, we had a Special Interest social over to the stake house. I enjoyed. Wednesday was Deloy and Lynn’s wedding anniversary and also Josh’s birthday. I bought a card and taped money on the inside. He really thought that was great. I went down after work and spent an hour or two visiting. I also took Lisa, Amy and Katie with me. We enjoyed it. Then on April, 17th, was Jamie’s birthday. Lynne gave me $10.00 and I went to The Closet and bought two little outfits for her. She came over to the office to thank me later on. Jackie baked her a Raggedy Ann cake for her birthday.
